Sepia Saturday 75: Oxford University

Having quite a few vintage postcards of Oxford, I was able to be a "themer" again this week on Sepia Saturday, and was almost spoilt for choice as to which ones to include, so I've taken another detail from the theme ... inside at Oxford University colleges. The only thing missing from my postcards is people, which is a bit of a shame as the images look a little sterile.
Oxford, Oriel College library, published by Frith

Oxford, Magdalen College cloisters, published by Penrose and Palmer

Oxford, Jesus College, dining hall, published by Frith

As usual, 100's more vintage postcards on my web site

  1. They do look unusually sterile. Even the globes look blank. I like the patterns of light on the second one.

  2. Oh my goodness.....these are so fascinating...they look like something out of a good mystery novel waiting to be read...!

  3. Even the Firth cards look bland which is unusual. Still they all have a bit of perspective.

  4. I find that many interior postcard shots from this era were deviod of people - I wonder why?

  5. I thought there was a person at the end of the room in the first one but on second look, it may be a bust. The second one does look interesting.

  6. At least number 1 LOOKs like a library. I’m a little bit worried about what Anthony Seldon is up to at Wellington College this week, though I have an open mind, and think it may just work....but the thought of getting rid of all those REAL books make me shudder!

I love number 2, as anything with the sunlight on cloisters has my vote. I lived in Salisbury (UK) for nearly twenty years, and just loved the cloisters in the cathedral. Number 3 I’m not so sure about, but again, thank you very much for posting these .

  7. Nice cards. I think Friths wanted to give the postcards a sense of history. Having people in the pictures would have ruined that concept, though it would have made them more interesting to us today.

  9. I think they're full of noisy ghosts, though!

  10. I enlarged the first photo because I thought I saw a person at the far end - turns out it's a bust of someone. The globes look like they need a good dusting - something like my coffee table. Wonderful old photos!

  11. I do love Oxford. I had a friend working on her masters at one of the colleges. When I visited she showed me how to walk through each gate into the college grounds. She told me to look like I belonged and ignore the fellow in the booth. It worked and we wandered from college to college having a wonderful time.
